COMBUSTION PROCESS

One of the key aspects of meeting those goals is the combustion process. The TurboMax^™ engine offers premium performance, yet still runs on regular fuel. How? A multi-hole direct injection with up to 20 megapascals (2,900 psi) of injection pressure adjusts to single, double or triple pulse injection per cycle. This combustion concept helps maintain high efficiency while also meeting SULEV 30 emissions. Smart.

TURBO DESIGN
AND INTEGRATION

To tackle the tough hauls and tow the heavy loads, an engine requires some real crafting. Again, it’s that strong diesel-like, low-end torque that makes it all possible. But let’s go deeper. The inline 4-cylinder arrangement provides a symmetrical natural turbo placement, while big cylinders feed into a near-equal-length integrated exhaust manifold that couples with the dual volute turbo. The exhaust pulses are separated through the turbine, which helps provide exceptional responsiveness and turbo boost performance.

AIR COMPRESSION AND COOLING

The large-charge air cooler acts as the middleman between the turbo and engine. This feature takes warm, compressed air and cools it down before reaching the engine, increasing efficiency and power. The result: optimum towing capability in hot conditions.

FULLY FORGED BOTTOM END

Heavy-duty durability starts with a strong foundation. The engine has a fully forged-steel bottom end, starting with a stiff forged-steel crankshaft and supported by forged-steel main bearing caps.

DIESEL ENGINE TECHNOLOGY

Turbocharged engines are subject to higher loads than naturally aspirated engines. That’s why this TurboMax^™ engine is equipped with diesel technologies, such as tri-metal rod bearings, pistons with a fully machined crown and a cast-iron ring carrier supporting a physical vapor deposition (PVD) coated steel top ring. Because when you set out to take on the heavy loads with turbocharged power, start with an engine that was designed to do just that.

DESIGN AND BUILD

Long-term durability all starts with attention to detail. For instance, chain drives are designed to achieve full service life. It’s an extra detail that lives deep inside the hydraulic tensioners and plays a significant role in long-lasting durability by reducing high chain loads and stress on the chain drive systems. The lower crankcase extension also plays a big part and is used to support the main bearing caps. This feature is designed to handle the heavy loads that turbocharging offers while adding to the solid foundation.

THERMAL CONDUCTIVITY

Another thing about turbocharged engines is they are subject to higher temperatures than naturally aspirated engines. So how do they handle the heat? One way is with spiny lock nodular cast-iron liners. They provide a durable wear surface for the rings, which is critical for long engine life. And the locking interface increases heat transfer out of the cylinder to the water jacket. Sodium-filled exhaust valve stems, as well as high thermal conductivity valve seats and guides, are also used. These help keep exhaust valves running cool under extreme, high-performance situations.

TURBOCHARGER LUBRICATION AND COOLING

Symmetrical natural turbo placement allows for priority feed oil from the filter and the perfect coolant routing. This provides thermosyphon cooling, which aids in keeping the turbo cool after shutting down. And under extreme conditions, the electric water pump can provide after-run cooling. Keeping the turbo lubricated and cool are the keys to a long life.
